Chapped finger nails are something that you cannot hide. Using nails to open lids or as a garden tool starts to show despite your best effort to keep it undercover. Even applying a layer of nail polish doesn’t help much, as the nails still show signs of an uneven surface underneath.
Cause of chapped fingernails:
There are many factors responsible for making nails ridged. Nail chipping is a common sign of ageing but can affect anyone of any age.
When the chipping is horizontal, it is a sign of a serious health issue. Get it checked by a doctor to rule out any life threatening health disorders.
If not a threatening physical health issue, chipped nails are a common result of malnutrition or malabsorption. It may be a sign of vitamin deficiency or the lack of absorption of the same due to an innate medical condition. The first sign of weakness shows on the nails. Consult a doctor to put the malabsorption at rest.
Dehydration is another cause of chipping. Remember to always moisturise your nails and cuticle every night to deal with the issue of chapped nails. Apart from the bed time regime, increase your water intake.
Other common causes are menopause (in women), nail care neglect, autoimmune disorders, lung infections or exposure to toxins.
Dealing with chapped finger nails:
Now that you know the possible causative factors, the next plan of action is to avoid these agents and following these tips to reverse the damages inflicted.
1) If you drink a few glasses of water every day, increase it by few more. Nutritionists suggest eight tall glasses of water everyday as the ideal volume of intake. Drinking a little over that, did no harm to anyone either.
2) File your nails right. It may not be as simple as it sounds, but if you file them wrong you will be making your nails weaker. Weak nails crack and break easily. So the next time you are filing your nails at home, do it with care and limited pressure.
3) Groom your nails frequently. Remove grime and dirt particles regularly. Soak your hands in warm water with a mild detergent-based shampoo to remove any dirt.
4) Make biotin a part of your vitamin B intake. Consult a doctor and stick to the prescribed daily dosage. With regular intake of biotin, results are visible in terms of healthy hair, nails and stronger bones.
4) Use rubber gloves when you use harsh chemicals while you clean and carry out the house hold chores. While gardening, a rubber glove is as important as your shovel. Don’t dig into dirt with bare hands.
5) Avoid acetone-based nail polish remover, they strip the nails of moisture making them brittle.
6) Get regular manicures and carry your own tools if possible.
7) Include more vitamin A and calcium in your diet. Eat green leafy vegetables, fresh vegetables like carrots and squashes. Nuts like peanuts, soya bean, walnuts, lentils, yeast, egg yolk, cauliflower are rich sources of the essential vitamins and nutrients.
